Designer Dress Inspired by Spanish Wine

Narciso Rodriguez

I’ve worn quite a few dresses while drinking wine. But I’ve never worn a dress that was actually inspired by one.

But Narciso Rodriguez, the fashion designer and subject of my column this weekend fell so deeply in love with a wine from Spain (Portal) that he first tasted at Casa Mono in New York that he was inspired to turn it into a dress (featured in his 2007 spring collection).

It was the color of the wine — a clear garnet hue — that transfixed him.

“I couldn’t stop thinking about it,” he said. It was particularly interesting to hear Mr. Rodriguez say that since very few people seem to actually spend much time actually looking at wine. They might smell it a few times and taste it several more, but most wine doesn’t seem to warrant much more than a glance. Perhaps wine drinkers could learn a lesson or two from a top designer: a great wine has everything, including a great color.
