Like any destination city, the City of Wine of Marqués de Riscal is an enclave of culture and refined taste—one inspired entirely by a passion for wine. Located in the heart of Spain’s Rioja Alavesa, the City of Wine was designed by architect Frank O. Gehry, using modern materials to create an international landmark in honor of the winemaking traditions of Marqués de Riscal. With hues of pink to represent the wines, gold to evoke the netting of the Riscal bottle and silver to suggest the bottle top, Gehry’s building beckons to visitors from around the globe who look to engage in the world of wine with all their senses. “We have fantastic wines and we wanted to share them. Through our partnerships with artists and creators, we are excited to welcome the many Marqués de Riscal fans who appreciate the lifestyle of wine,” says Alejandro Aznar, chairman of Vinos de los Herederos del Marqués de Riscal.

The 43-room Hotel Marqués de Riscal, part of Starwood’s prestigious The Luxury Collection, offers an unparalleled guest experience, nestled among the Vinos de los Herederos del Marques de Riscal’s vineyard. Gehry’s fantastic vision is the setting for an original wine country experience, with each well-appointed luxury guest room offering a unique perspective of the surrounding vineyards. At SPA Vinothérapie® Caudalie, guests can enjoy a truly immersive wine experience, with water from a hot spring combining with local vine and grape extracts in relaxing body treatments such as the Crushed Cabernet Scrub or Pulp Friction Massage.


Dine on Spain’s Finest


At the Marqués de Riscal Restaurant located on the second f loor of the hotel, guests and visitors enjoy Michelin star-awarded dining. Under the direction of Francis Paniego, chef of the prestigious Restaurante Echaurren in nearby Ezcaray, a team of 15 chefs brings together elements of traditional regional dishes and avant-garde techniques. A selection of over 250 wines spanning five continents offers plenty of options for pairing with the creative cuisine, although many diners seize the opportunity to sample Marqués de Riscal’s food-friendly whites, rosés and reds. For a more casual dining option, Bistro 1860 offers guests stunning views of the medieval town of Elciego and the surrounding vineyards and mountains while seated under a gleaming titanium and steel canopy.


Taste Rioja’s Legendary Wines


None of the architectural and culinary art of the City of Wine would exist were it not for the legacy of Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga, who founded the bodega more than 150 years ago. Deep beneath the lavish accommodations and refined dining, lurks the original Marqués de Riscal cellar dating to 1858, keeper of a treasure trove of 8 million of bottles of wine. Each year, a team of artisan winemakers, led by Francisco Hurtado de Amézaga and including others descended directly from the founder, utilize the grapes of Rioja Alavesa to interpret the new vintage, crafting works of art to be revered and relished by wine lovers of discerning taste around the world.

Marqués de Riscal Próximo

A Rioja in the sin crianza style, this youthful, medium-bodied red offers ripe strawberry and cherry fruit with savory complexity and toast on the finish.
Wine wisdom: Crianza wine from Rioja is aged for at least two years, including at least one year in oak, while sin crianza wines are bottled younger.

Marqués de Riscal Reserva

Ruby red in color, this wine delivers aromas of vanilla, toasted oak and plum, with flavors of licorice and spice on the long, dry finish.
Wine wisdom: Reserva wine from Rioja is aged for at least three years, including at least one year in oak.

 

 Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva

The brick color suggests a well-aged wine, richly layered with flavors of black cherry, marzipan and dark chocolate coming together on the refined finish.
Wine wisdom: Gran Reserva wine from Rioja is aged at least two years in oak and three years in bottle.

 

 Marqués de Riscal Rueda

This fresh and fruity white delivers flavors of green apple and spiced pears, leading to a refreshing finish laced with crisp acidity.
