Some anniversaries celebrate the passage of time; others celebrate having changed history. That is precisely what this special edition of Barón de Chirel commemorates: the 40th anniversary of the first vintage of a wine that holds a unique place in the history of Marqués de Riscal and in the evolution of Rioja’s finest wines.

Since its beginnings in 1858, Marqués de Riscal has maintained a close connection with Bordeaux winemaking methods. As a result of this relationship, the idea emerged in 1986 to create an experimental wine that would revive the greatness of the historic Médoc Reservas, reinterpreted through the resources, expertise and technology of the 20th century. The concept drew on a very specific historical inspiration: the special blends produced by Marqués de Riscal’s winemakers until the 1950s, combining the finest Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes exclusively in the very best vintages.

It was a bold and daring idea that made a highly successful entrance into a market increasingly eager for exceptional-quality wines. Thus, Barón de Chirel 1986 was born: a wine that ushered in a new era for fine wine in Rioja and that, from the outset, represented a different way of understanding wine—one founded on innovation, courage and the constant pursuit of excellence.

With Barón de Chirel 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Marqués de Riscal commemorates four decades of this visionary spirit. This special edition highlights the historical and symbolic significance of Barón de Chirel, reinforcing its status as an icon within the winery’s portfolio and among the great wines of Rioja.
