Marqués de Riscal launches its first white wine produced in Rioja, Barón de Chirel Rioja Viñas Centenarias 2024 —a wine crafted to stand the test of time, while embodying the pioneering and innovative spirit that defines the winery.
This exceptional white wine is born from Viura, Garnacha Blanca, Malvasía, and Maturana grapes, sourced exclusively from the headlands of centenary vineyards in Rioja Alavesa—vineyards traditionally planted with red varieties of outstanding quality, known as Patas Negras.
Historically, in these headlands of old vineyards, winegrowers would plant white varieties in the poorest parts of the estate—typically on slopes and inclined terrain—to compensate for the low yields of these plots through their higher productivity. Today, these vines produce small, loose clusters with grapes of extraordinary quality and remarkable aromatic concentration.
Barón de Chirel Rioja Viñas Centenarias stands apart thanks to its origin in centenary vineyards, which provide high acidity and low pH—ideal conditions for crafting age-worthy wines that convey a distinctive sense of freshness, finesse, and unmistakable elegance.
A creation that pays tribute to the heritage of winemaking expertise and to the wisdom of winegrowers, presented by Marqués de Riscal under the Barón de Chirel brand to mark the 40th anniversary of the first vintage (1986) of this iconic and prestigious wine. A benchmark and driving force behind the renaissance of Rioja’s great wines, the first vintage of Barón de Chirel marked the beginning of a new era.
